Stylophonika

5 November 2021

Stylophonika, the debut album by the Kingston University Stylophone Orchestra, was released by the electronica label Spun Out Of Control on limited edition vinyl and as a download.

The orchestra began in early 2019. Tony Visconti introduced Leah Kardos to Dubreq, who donated a collection of new and vintage Stylophones to the studio analogue instrument archive. Faced with a car boot full of them, she wondered aloud whether an ensemble might be possible, put up a notice, and a handful of students turned up to the first rehearsal.

The limits of the instrument turned out to be productive. The group sound grew to take in the rest of the Dubreq range, along with theremin, Omnichord, Volca sequencers, and the members own voices.

The pandemic stopped rehearsals through 2020. With performances cancelled, the orchestra turned instead to making a record, something everyone could work on remotely. Once campus reopened in March 2021 they came back into the studio to finish it.
