Internships
We take interns onto real sessions. The tasks will generally involve booking and fetching equipment, setting up, patching, running tape, and assisting the engineer while a record is being made.
Who can apply
You need to have been trained on this studio's equipment. That means one of the following:
- You are a Kingston undergraduate and have completed at least one teaching block of MU5201.
- You are on MA Music Production or MA Music Composition and can demonstrate competence in studio operations.
The postgraduate route is different. A shorter, one-year course does not leave room to wait out a term of a module, so we ask you to show us what you can already do instead.
What you will do
Placements are on sessions actually booked into the studio, so what you do depends on what is happening. Across a year that has included assistant engineering, Pro Tools and tape machine operation, session setup, microphone placement and signal routing, and assisting at public events in the live room.
Placements rotate. We aim to place every intern on the register at least once in the academic year, though how many opportunities come up depends on what is booked.
How to apply
You must be a Kingston University student. Complete the application form, and include your K-number, a link to something you have made recently that shows your engineering or production work. A track, a mix, or a session recording is fine, hosted anywhere we can reach it.
If you are a postgraduate student, this link is how you demonstrate competence, so choose something that shows you operating equipment/working efficiently in studio environments rather than examples of composing or writing.
What happens next
Once your application is accepted, you will be added to the internship register. When a suitable placement comes up, you will be contacted with details of the session and what will be required. Placements are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and will be matched to the needs of each session where possible.
